Car wheel bearings are car parts that bear the brunt of friction between the wheel axle and the wheel, so that, the wheel rotation is smooth. Wheels rotate at a very rapid pace and if there wasn't for a bearing, it would be a very bumpy ride indeed! They are a buffer between a metal to metal contact surface, which prolongs the life of the axle and the wheel. Friction and heat are the bane of moving machine parts in contact with each other. A large part of design effort goes in to reducing this damaging friction through lubrication and buffers like bearings. The bearing is a slotted disk with ball bearings placed inside, which roll and enable the movement of the wheel while reducing friction.

If the car wheel bearings fail this way you will here a rubbing noise only when the vehicle is moving forward and usually at lower speeds at first. How to test for a wheel bearing noise? We need to jack the suspect wheel off the ground and spin the wheel. If the wheel will not spin freely it is because there is too much drag on the brakes or bearings to allow testing. Sometimes we need to move the brake pads to clear the discs to reduce the drag. You would normally be able to hear a growling moaning type noise if there is a car wheel bearing problem. 

There are different types of car & van car wheel bearings; some are a sealed bearing unit. Some are roller bearings in a cage. This type is tapered with a shell either side.

This type can be packed with grease and can be adjusted. The sealed type cannot be adjusted or repacked with grease. They both usually need to be pressed out and new ntn bearings pressed in. What ever type they are we can replace a car wheel bearing and a car & van bearing of all types.
